Too bad - I know it can be resolved by using a powered USB hub for the connection, but that's not very elegant. I was hoping perhaps Apple would have conceded that there are some very good reasons for reinstating the 100 mA limit. On the plus side, I hadn't spent the money on the connector yet.
Agreed, it's ridiculous that they would cripple their own adapter. But then again it's also ridiculous that the old iPod camera adapter, which looks exactly the same, doesn't work on the iPad.

Nice picts Ward, can you get 8-10 hrs on the batteries?
I used to love playing crystal quest on my MacPortable.
I'm sure you are running some AfterDark screen savers as well.
Does anyone remember the "Barney Blaster" screen module?
I was NOT allowed to play that in front of my young nieces/nephews back then.

Ward;
just saw your other thread. You gotta show some AD screen saver picts!!

Like others I have some computers on all of the time. I have two linux boxes and it is easy to run folding in the background and I can never tell. In fact on my Slackware machine I don't even use a GUI, so I have folding on one terminal window and I use Telnet and IRC on other telnet windows. That is about all the Slackware machine does so it can handle a little folding.
Regardless of if my systems make a difference, or I score very many points, I could possibly be doing some good and I have contributed to the team and I think it would be neat to build a Folding cluster of old Macs and Linux boxes.

Ok my mom just got a cable modem today. I have dsl at my house so I'm not sure if i'm doing everything right. The problem is, the airport is not getting an ip address from the modem. I just un-pluged everything for 8min and still nothing(This is applecare said to do.) The modem works fine when hooked up to a computer direct. Anyone have any hints at all. This is really getting to me. Shes running 10.2.6 and all the newest versions of airport/basestation etc.

Screw Combustion, I want Discreet to get the bugs out of Cleaner 6. Since they picked up Cleaner from Terran Interactive years ago they haven't done squat. They rarely even put out the "new version coming soon" lie on their BB anymore because every time they do they get slammed.

So I'm a freelance Editor/Motion Graphics guy with no real understanding of RAID Controller Cards, or how they work.
As of right now I have three 1TB drives inside my Mac Pro, RAIDed together (stripe 0) using the OS. No Raid card.
The drives are all 7200rpm from varying manufacturers. (not sure if this matters.)
My questions is; is it beneficial for me to get a RAID card to control these drives vs. leaving it to the OS to handle? Any suggestions for me?
Thanks.
2010 8-Core Mac Pro 2.4

It all depends on the details of how you use the system (RAID is supposed to be configured to the specific usage, so there's no "one size fits all", though for narrowed usage patterns, you will see similarities).
I'd advise you to search out previous RAID threads (there's quite a few), and pay attention to the various questions asked, and get back to us with some answers). I'd also recommend you review Wiki's RAID page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID) (pay particular attention to the different levels).
If you're a paid professional, using a stripe set (RAID 0) is a disaster waiting to happen. Even with a backup, you'll spend a fair bit of time to perform a recovery when a disk dies (matter of when, not if), and this also means re-performing work that was done between the most recent backup and when the array failed (beyond replacing the bad disk and restoring all the backup files, which presumably <worst case>, will be multiples to return all the data you have from your backup media).
Glad to see you at least have some sort of backup with your current configuration. :)
Now if you go with a RAID card, you'll need to use enterprise grade drives for stability reasons (different recovery timings in the firmware than consumer models, which tend to be unstable as a result). Unfortunately, they're not as cheap (in fact, can be 2x as expensive as their consumer counterparts for the latest capacity).
Consumer disks are fine for backup purposes though, and this can save you a considerable amount of funds, particularly if your capacity requirements are high (i.e. eSATA card + Port Multiplier based external enclosure; example kit (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816111136&cm_re=tr4mp-_-16-111-136-_-Product)).
There are some inexpensive products that claim RAID 5, but be careful. Some are software based, which should never be used for this level (no solution to the "write hole issue" associated with parity based arrays). Others use very inexpensive hardware RAID controllers (aka RoC = RAID on a Chip). They're slow for primary usage, and is why they're cheap (compromise on performance vs. proper RAID cards).
If on a budget you could go with RAID-Z, it involves switching to the ZFS file system. RAID-Z1 apparently offers similar performance to RAID5. Read this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1135718) for further insight.
This can get complicated on the software end though, and not recommended for those that aren't comfortable with the additional complexity (patches for OS X or via VM), particularly for a DAS system (has more merit with NAS or SAN IMO).
So I'd stick with a 3rd party hardware RAID card, assuming this is actually needed, enterprise disks and any enclosures/mounting hardware necessary. Much simpler in terms of software (install the drivers, and any interface software that's required to access the card settings), and the hardware aspect isn't that difficult either.
I would get an SSD for the OS and use the 3x 7200rpm Disks in RAID5.
RAID5 is great for storing uncompressed video data and in your case would offer protection against a single drive failure.
Most cards don't deal with consumer grade disks very well (ATTO and Area definitely don't).
But consumer disks are fine for backup purposed (i.e via eSATA and PM enclosures) due to the lower duty cycle (where you can cut costs effectively, and not endanger the data).
or Just RAID5 with 3x HDD's and partition the RAID volume.
I wouldn't do this if both partitions are to be used simultaneously (i.e. primary data one one partition, scratch data on the other).
The most recommend cards right now are the Areca 6g 1880 series or the new ATTO 6G series. For your needs something like the ARC-1880-i SAS 6G RAID Controller would suffice if you don't plan to connect external RAID/Storage solution.
Those are the best recommendations as far as brand and series per. As to a specific model, it will depend on the specifics, particularly for growth (i.e 8 ports may be outgrown in under 3 years, so getting a card with sufficient ports to last that long would be cheaper in the long run - just add disks and enclosures as necessary).
Sorry should have been more clear (like I said I'm dumb) I have a 500GB Boot drive that lives independently from the (3) 1TB drives RAIDED together via the OS.
A separate boot disk is advisable, as you still have a working OS if the array goes down (allows you to access the card, use the browser to search for help, or deal with Support from the card manufacturer if needed).
And ALL data (3.5TB's) is backed up by an external 4TB Time Machine RAID (2 drives @ 2TB each)...which is connected via 2 eSATA cables via the eSATA PCI Card I bought from OWC...which I guess is actually RAIDed by the OS as well.
That backup solution is a RAID 0. The overall backup solution will almost certainly need to change in order to be sufficient for the primary storage pool you'll end up with.
Not sure what you are looking at, since 3 drives is sort of an odd combination. I have a 2009/2010 Mac Pro Nehalem, running the apple sas card for the 4 internal bays (yes I know they make adapters to use 3rd party cards), and the performance is fair, not great but fair. About 300Mb/s read/write with 4 WD Black edition drives (1tb each). Externally, running an Areca 1680x card, with a 8 drive ProAvio chassis, 8 SAS Seagate 15k7 drives (450GB) which gives close to 900MB/s. I have tried multiple cards over the years, nano and I have exchanged lots of posts/messages. Email/PM me with specific questions and I will try and help you. Beware of most of these 3rd party slot adapters/etc. they are more hassle than they are worth.
I've not heard or seen any issues with the MaxUpgrades kit.
As per Apple's card, I'm no fan of it, particularly due to the cost/performance ratio.
BTW, the OP only has 2 posts at the time of writting this, so returning a PM isn't possible yet (needs to have 5 posts IIRC). email would work if you have that enabled.

Every month at work, we purchase a new PC to upgrade general office computers. Right now, the typical boxes we are getting are 3.2GHz P4 boxes with 1GB of memory. The IT guy and I are debating the wisdom/stupidity of installing Folding on them, and switching back and forth every month between user names. We got the okay from the boss to Fold on a few specific boxes, so we probably won't do this...but it's fun to plot and plan anyway.:p

Though i also bought Playstation Move = that's pretty much doing nothing with my Wii for company at the moment.
Yeah. PS3's Move is too much like the Wii for me. I can't seem to get excited about it. Being a former EyeToy and a current PS Eye owner, I'm also a bit skeptical since the Eye is a required Move component. The quality of the Eye is pretty bad. I'm very surprised they didn't release an updated HD Eye since it's so central to making Move work. I've had nothing but problems with it (poor low light performance, bad picture quality, etc).
Most of the game critics have lambasted the launch title Move games too (SingStar Dance, EyePet, Sports Champions, The Shoot, Tiger Woods, etc). The highest I've seen is a 7 out of 10.
At least Kinect is different from the Wii since it doesn't require a controller. Then again, most of the Kinect games are Wii knock offs (Kinect Sports=Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort, Joy Ride = Excite Truck, Fitness games = Wii fit, etc).
The only one that looks different is Adventures. I don't know. I think I'll hold off.

reebzor: Given that I can't have wiring running around to the speakers (that need to be on opposite ends of the room), unfortunately this won't work.
waw74: It sounds like airplay speakers would be the best bet for ease of setup (in theory). The ihome option looks really nice - what a bummer they aren't available yet. Looks like the only AirPlay speaker available now is the Zeppelin Air ($600 apiece, so $1200 for a pair...wow). I'm a bit confused why it has a dock though, since it seems the reason for buying one would be to use airplay, but maybe I am missing the point.
Sounds like Airport Express would be the least expensive option. I didn't know I can make an Express a "base" without having internet access. So to make sure i understand ... I would buy 2 Airport Expresses. I would connect my MBP to one AirPort Express (no internet connection needed), and then have the AirPort Express create a wireless network, which I could then connect the second AirPort Express to using my MBP. The just plug speakers in the Expresses on opposite sides of the room, and I'll be good to go, correct?
Thanks-

Hey all,
Long time listener first time caller, err I mean poster. I bought my first MacBook Pro (early 17", 2.3GHz, 8GB ram, anti-glare) in March and absolutely love it! Anyway the new iMacs were announced (as I'm sure everyone is aware of lol) and I started thinking about getting an iMac as my main machine and selling my 17" MBP. I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan so this wouldn't be until July when we get back, but a friend is ready to buy my 17, in fact we've already worked out a good price for both us of :D
So now the only thing left to decide is, do I get the 2.7GHz 13 inch, or the 2.0GHz 15 inch. I priced the 13" at $1748 ($1499 base + $249 AppleCare) versus the 15" (lower end model) at $2298 ($1799 base + $150 for hi-res anti-glare + $349 AppleCare). I'm gonna upgrade the RAM and HDDs myself, (getting an OptiBay, 256GB c300, and 750GB Scorpio Black for the new laptop too lol) so the cost for that is gonna be the same regardless of which model I get. I also like the idea of being able to just walk into an Apple Store and leaving with my new laptop, do they normally stock the hi-res anti-glare 15"?
I'd mostly be using the laptop while traveling (or deploying again lol), I use Aperture regularly (check out my Photography site at www.aaronpbrown.com) and may occasionally use Final Cut Express. Am I gonna miss the real estate on a 13" MBP, especially coming from a 17"? Also is the dedicated graphics, extra screen and quad core worth $550 over the 13?
Thanks for taking a look!

Most likely to help promote being in the keynote attendance. Or it's out of MacWorld's budget. Or Apple said no, because they want exclusive rights to the video and want to put it online on their own terms. Sounds to me like the ladder.
You mean "latter". But yeah I guess......no its still stupid. They need to put this stuff up live!!! They can afford it dang nabbit!! And they had better put up the freakin video that night........IN HIGH RESOLUTION TOO!!!!

OK, so to recap:
I can leave my SSD as is (that is, I can continue to choose to boot from that and have it run Snow Leopard).
I can installed Lion on the Hard Disk and choose to boot from that if I want.
Question: If my home folder is stored on the Hard Disk for when I run Snow Leopard with the SSD, how do I prevent home folder complications when I install Lion on the Hard Disk? Don't want it to mess up the snow leopard experience.

i used to do a lot of traveling and my PSP kept me
if you're into old school, i got a lot of play out of the Pirates! remake for the PSP and it's at bargain bin prices now. there's an EA collection for the PSP with Wing Commander and a lot of other good games, but avoid it... they're all SNES versions and virtually unplayable. biggest waste of $29 i ever spent on a PSP game. no where on the box could i find that they were the half-assed SNES versions of good PC games.
but anyways...
if you like Zelda-esque RPG's, the PSP version of Y's kept me entertained on some long plane trips. that's probably also in the bargain bin by now.
my friend says Puzzle Quest is very good if you can find it, but i'm not into those types of games personally. lumines is crap if you ask me, but hey... to each their own.

my friend says Puzzle Quest is very good if you can find it, but i'm not into those types of games personally. lumines is crap if you ask me, but hey... to each their own.

Keynote @ Hour 2: Michael Jordan walks on stage spinning the MacBook Air on his finger...
Jordan makes more sense, but maybe the Globetrotters will help make up the entourage.
I think the name is dumb. I don't think they would link the product name to an easy to see banner. Obviously, the banner was meant to build hype or they would have just kept it covered.
They'll almost certainly do something cool with a wireless device, but I'm *certain* they won't name a machine Macbook Air. It doesn't even make any sense really.
